Those stories didn't always work, but, as Inara promised, I learned how to be a writer. I went to Hillsboro Water Department barbecues and The Swift Lady of Kenton's roof, and I tried to match the breezy style in my favorite magazine.
Inara was the paper's most brilliant writer, so I listened and I practiced writing Talks of the Town. I could try things, and there would be fewer rules and consequences than there would be later, when I was writing downtown.
